River in upper Norrland and one of Sweden's national rivers. Originates in northern Lapland near the national border, at the foot of the mountain Kebnekaise. Flows straight east until it merges with Tärendö river which connects Kalixälv with Torne river. Here it continues straight south until it empties into the Bothnian Sea at Kalix. 430 km long. Appointed a National river in 1993. Offers a very varied fishing, including grayling, trout, whitefish, char, pike and not least salmon.
